Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that will remove fat from stubborn areas that you are trying to lose weight from, to give you a fresh, trim body. Targeting fat that you haven’t been able to shift through other means, liposuction is performed in areas such as belly, thighs, hips, buttocks, back, arms or under the chin by a plastic or dermatologic surgeon. Taking as little as 2 hours, one or more areas can be targeted per procedure. Whilst it isn’t defined as a permanent cosmetic surgery, by reducing the number of fat cells in the area it makes it more difficult for the body to regenerate fat where the procedure was undertaken.
Using a cannula, the surgeon will insert this thin tube via a small incision and use suction to rid unwanted fat and fluids from your body. Up to 5kg of fat can be removed considering you are a good candidate for the surgery, and liposuction can be paired with a tummy tuck to help regain a more toned waistline. As with any cosmetic surgery procedure, it is important to remember that your surgery will not turn you into someone else and you should not rely on your procedure to change your life. If you are considering undergoing a procedure it is imperative you speak to someone you trust, are happy in your life and are simply seeking to enhance your appearance and confidence, rather than looking to completely change who you are. Once you arrive at your destination you will have a physical evaluation with your surgeon, where you will discuss your goals and concerns and finalise the plan for surgery. At this examination your surgeon will determine the best procedure for you and explain it to you in detail, including any limitations. It is important that you head into surgery with realistic goals. It is during this examination that your surgeon may also make recommendations for other procedures available to you at the same time.
In the lead-up to your surgery, it is important you do the following:
Stop smoking. Smoking can cause problems with circulation and increase the possibility of complications.
Length of surgery:
This procedure takes one to two hours, per area treated. The amount of fat removed will help determine whether your procedure will be done as outpatient surgery or will require an overnight stay in hospital.
Recovery and post-op care:
After your surgery it is common to experience fluid leaking and draining for several days as well as discomfort, swelling and bruising for the first few weeks. Your surgeon will fit you with special compression garments after your surgery to help with skin remodelling. These should be worn for six weeks. During the recovery period, it is common to have restricted movement and activity. It is not until swelling wears off after several months that you will see the full effects of liposuction. This usually starts around the four- to six-week mark.
It is important to live a healthy lifestyle and partake in regular exercise to help to maintain your new shape.
Length of stay:
We recommend you stay on holiday for 7 to 10 days, during which time you will have follow-up appointments with your surgeon. To get the most out of your recovery time we suggest you partake in gentle exercise, yoga classes and treat yourself to some pampering. If you are feeling up to it, there is plenty to see and do in Phuket, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.
Does liposuction permanently remove fat?
The procedure of liposuction uses a tube, called a cannula, and a suction device, known as an aspirator, to remove stubborn areas of fat in the body. Liposuction does in fact permanently remove fat cells from the body. By reducing the number of fat cells, liposuction makes it harder for the body to regenerate fat in the targeted area.
How much weight can you lose on liposuction?
Up to 5kg of fat can be removed with a single liposuction procedure, and it can be common to include more than one area during the surgery. The amount of fat removed will help determine whether your procedure will be done as outpatient surgery or will require an overnight stay in hospital.
Does liposuction hurt?
This is an understandable concern, so let us ease your worries by telling you that you should not experience any pain during the procedure. This is because you will be under general anaesthetic and will therefore be oblivious to pain, although you may be aware of some movement and pressure.
How painful is liposuction recovery?
During your post-surgery and recovery, you may experience some discomfort in the affected area. Most likely, this will feel like a large bruise and can remain uncomfortable for several days. You will also be required to wear a special compression garment for six weeks to help with skin
