Liposuction

Liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical procedure intended shape the body and remove fat deposit. A vacuum-suction canula (a hollow pen-like instrument) is used to remove the fat from under the skin as well as an ultrasonic probe that emulsifies (breaks up into small pieces) the fat and then removes it with suction.

People with fat that is localized may decide to have liposuction to get rid of fat from that area. Liposuction is not recommended for weight loss but more a procedure for shaping the body.

Liposuction may be performed various places which include the abdomen thigh, hips, back, buttocks, knees, ankle, calves, arms, love handles/flanks, chin, mons pubis, chest (male).

Liposuction may include more than one area for surgery on the same day, for example the abdomen, and back.

Liposuction is commonly used for cosmetic body shaping but is not limited; it is also used to reduce breast size in men with large breasts (gynecomastia) or to remove fat tumors (lipomas)

Liposuction is a procedure that can help sculpt the body by removing unwanted fat from specific areas.
Pockets of excess fat tend of accumulate in the areas of the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck.
A pear-shaped figure may result in self-consciousness and clothing issues thereby calling for liposuction.
A small cannula is inserted through small incisions in the skin. At the other end of the tube is a vacuum-pressure unit that suctions off the fat.
A compression garment helps reduce swelling, and continue to sculpt the body into the desired shape.
When most of the swelling has subsided, you will see your new look emerge. As healing progresses, a more proportional look will be revealed.

Benefits of Liposuction

A fresh trim body – abdomen, thighs, and hips, can offer a psychological boost and motivation to exercise regularly and maintain fitness.

Are you an ideal candidate?

In most cases of young healthy patients with excellent skin tone and localized areas of fat deposits, skin re-draping is almost always excellent.

The skin has extraordinary properties of being able to shrink down and retract into new position without generating any overhang in your skin. When you reach your final goal weight you are left with a slimmer, trimmer you with perhaps more body definition no loose body over hang. However, if you are overweight by 25-30kgs, older, or already have loose skin, then, when you loose the weight, you may see some changes to the skin that certainly would leave some overhang and skin irregularities.

Much of your individual case will depend on your skin type, if you have loose skin in the beginning and also stretch marks, then this is the type of skin that has lost its elastic properties and will not retract as well as we would like. These cases are usually patients that have been through extreme changes in body weight either by weight gain or loss, such as having children. In these cases it is best to combine liposuction with a skin reducing procedure. You may think you want liposuction in the abdominal area, but you might find that an abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, may meet your goals more successfully.

Preparation for liposuction

It is important for you to discuss any medical conditions that you have and tell us or your surgeon about any medications that you are taking including any herbal or other non-prescription ones prior to your surgery.

Discuss the procedure thoroughly with your surgeon before deciding if you want to go through with the procedure. Even though your surgeon maybe happy for you to go ahead with this surgeon, you may still change your mind afterwards.

Your surgeon will be able to answer your questions that you have about liposuction including what to expect during, after, and the complications or problems that sometimes occur with liposuction.

You will have a consultation with the surgeon when you arrive at your destination, where he will have a physical assessment of the areas to be treated. At this appointment you and your surgeon will discuss your goals, and any last queries you have.

Enquire here for your information sheet on preparation steps. We also advise you to read our pre-liposuction preparation for maximum results.

Surgical procedure

On the day of the surgery, your surgeon will mark out on your body to indicate where the fat is to be removed, with a pen.

Our surgeons practice the tumescent technique; this is a pretty new liposuction technique that can reduce post operative swelling, pain and bruising. Because blood loss is minimized during tumescent liposuction, use of the technique reduces the chance that a blood transfusion will be needed.

In the tumescent technique, a large amount of anesthetic liquid is injected into areas of excess fat before the before liposuction is performed. The liquid causes the fat compartments to become swollen and firm or “tumesced.” The enlarged fat compartments allow the liposuction cannula to travel easily beneath the skin as the fat is removed.

General anesthesia is used anesthesia that will put you to sleep during the procedure.

Once the anesthesia is working, the surgeon will make an incision (0.5 cm cut) in the area (usually in skin lines or folds so it is camouflaged) where the liposuction will be performed.

A canula, (a hollow tube that is about the size and shape of a skinny pen), will be inserted into the incision. The surgeon moves this canula back and forth to suction out the fat. The fat, and liquid that has been injected, are collected in a flask.

The surgeon will monitor the amount of fluid and fat that is removed. Because you will be losing liquid and fat from your body, it may be necessary to replace some of that fluid. This is done with an intravenous line for the replacement of fluid. The surgeon moves to different areas, keeping the number and size of incisions to a minimum.

Recovery and Post-op care

Depending on how much fat is removed, you may leave the hospital soon after the surgery unless you need to spend the night at the hospital. Its up to your surgeon so ask how long it will be before you should be able to return to your normal level of activity.

The cuts where the surgeon inserted the canula may leak or drain fluids for several days. The surgeon may insert a drainage tube to drain fluid away from the wound.

Special tight garments (compression garments) will be worn to help with the skin remodeling for up to 6 weeks and to keep your skin compressed after the liposuction procedure. You maybe restricted with activities during the recovering period. We have a local supplier that can provide compression garments if you need to purchase them.

You will be given some after-surgery instructions from your surgeon. This will include information on:

  • Wearing compression garments,
  • Taking an antibiotic if that has been prescribed,
  • The level of activity that is safe for you after your procedure. You should also have Information about signs of problems to be aware of, (e.g. the signs of infections).

There maybe some pain when the anesthesia wears off. This will vary for each patient, but initially extensive liposculpture can be painful. If the pain is extreme or for a long period, you should contact your surgeon or us. You will also have some swelling after the surgery, which can remain for weeks or even months. Pain and swelling, can be the sign of infection and you should contact your surgeon. You should start to feel better after approximately a week or two.

You will have minimal, almost invisible scars as a result of where the surgeon cuts your skin and inserts the canula to remove fat tissue.

Its not until the swelling reduces till the effects of the liposuction will be seen.

We provide great post-care support, with follow-up visits and programs to assist your recovery.

Recommended length of stay on holiday

The recommended length of stay on your holiday is 10-14 days. During your recovery time, and to achieve the best results, we suggest you take part in other programs we offer – pampering programs, or gentle exercise and yoga classes. Your New Look

You will see a noticeable difference in the shape of your body quite soon after surgery. Even though the unwanted fat has been removed, your body will be thinner but it will also still be swollen. After about two week s the swelling will start to come down and the results will appear more. So don’t be surprised if your clothes don’t fit in those first couple of weeks. After two weeks this swelling begins to come down and you will feel more yourself.

However, it will take a month before you are back to normal. Improvement will become more obvious after approximately four to six weeks, when most of the swelling has decreased. After about three months, any persistent mild swelling usually disappears and the final contour will be visible.

Liposuction is permanent procedure- when the fat cells are removed, they cannot grow back.

If you have realistic expectations, you will be very pleased with the results of your surgery. You will find that you are more comfortable in a wide variety of clothes and more at ease with your body.

By eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise, you can help to maintain your new shape. Those who follow a healthy diet are twice as likely to lose weight after liposuction. As a result people are more likely to be happy with their long-term results after liposuction if they make other healthy lifestyle changes. Research shows that people that have had liposuction are three times as likely to gain weight after due to not following a healthy diet.

Preconditions and Risks

We minimize risks and complications by always having the most skilled surgeons; physicians and nurses carry out procedures.

Liposuction is usually performed in young and healthy patients therefore it is very safe, however, like anything in life even though precautions are taken and safety measures instituted, though they are rare, complications can and do occur.

Special care has to be taken whenever more than 5 litres of fat are to be removed and multiple areas or procedures are being performed.

We minimize risks and complications by careful patient selection and always having the most skilled surgeons, physicians and nurses carry out procedures.

The less common complications of all surgery includes:

  • Bruising and swelling – usually settles after 1-2 weeks, but sometimes can take up to month or more.
  • Wounds may take longer to heal, there may be some bleeding and infection may require treatment with antibiotics.
  • A chest infection may develop after general anesthetic.
  • In extremely rare cases, a blood clot may develop, which could be risky if it moves to the heart, brain or lungs.
  • A sore throat may develop after breathing through the breathing tube used during anesthesia.
  • In few cases, surgical scars can develop that are pink, raised and irregularly shaped. These flatten and disappear over time.

Specific Risks of Liposuction

  • Contour irregularities.
  • Indentations.
  • Seroma (collection of wound fluid).
  • Infection.
  • Fat cells that are removed by liposuction do not regenerate. However, if you gain a significant amount of weight, the remaining fat cells can grow and store more fat, you will gain in those areas that haven’t previously had liposuction.
